The Sub-Grids in SharePoint Flex are powerful and integral web parts. Sub-Grids can be placed on Display Pages to view “Child” information related to the Display Page “Parent” and Dashboards in order to view list information.
Additionally Sub Grids can be added to display “Connected” information and even Custom lists containing information from third party data sources.
There can be many Sub-Grids on each Display Form, giving the user access to key pieces of information on related items.
The sub-grid is highly configurable – with many different behaviors and options that will be covered in the following sections.
In this sample Account Display Form, Sub-Grids are located directly below the main display Web part. Only 3 Sub-Grids are shown in this example, however, there is no limit to how many Sub-Grids may appear on any one Display Form.
Sub-Grids can contain many different combinations of configurable options and settings. Some of the popular and most commonly used Sub-Grid features are shown in the screenshots below:
Displaying Account Name
When an Account name is displayed in a Sub Grid the Quick Actions and Item Summary features are available as a “mouse hover” feature. Let’s explain this. There are two factors that are going on. The first item in a Sub Grid will default to the hyperlinked item.
As an example, the Sub-Grid below is set up to display Projects. In this case the Project Name is the Title field (which means that the Project Name will default to the hyperlinked field and therefore display all the Action Icons that default for the Title field) and the Account is therefore just text.
With this new enhancement the Account name also becomes useful because the Quick Actions and Item Summary are available as a “mouse hover” making it easier for the user to create new items for the Account, review details from the Account Display Page, edit information for an Account or any number of functions that are available from the Quick Actions.
Another example shown below is a Task Sub-Grid which has been added to the Dashboard. In this example the Due Date is configured to display the hyperlink. The Account also displays the Quick Actions and Item Summary.
Note: This feature is available with the March 2016 update or later.
