Changing a List Name

The ability to change a List Name is another feature of Flex. Changing the name is a detailed process and requires configuration through the Advanced Settings list. Changes required include Settings list entries, Column Fields, Sub-Grids, and Views.

The time required to change a list name will vary depending on how many references to the original Flex List name there are. It may take approximately 1 hour to change the name of the Accounts List to “Companies” simply due to the large number of references Flex has to this naming convention.

IMPORTANT: Every reference to the original name must be changed, within the various settings, views, and field columns to avoid problems occurring.

The example steps shown below are based on changing the name of the Accounts list to “Companies” but any List name can be changed.

Prerequisites: To complete this task, you will require administrative access on your Flex site.

  1. Navigate to the Advanced Flex Settings List.
  2. Select “Change a list name” in the Operations category:

  3. The Change List Name window will appear – reminding you to have a reliable backup before going further. Select the Current Flex list name to be changed from the drop-down menu.
  4. Then enter the NEW name for the list, along with its singular term:

Note: The Singular name mapping is also the same Field Value that the Outlook Plugin recognizes for its Toolbar option buttons. For example, if the Singular name for the list is changed, as shown above, the “Create Account” button on the Plugin Toolbar becomes “Create Company”:

  1. Click OK.
  2. Before the operation starts, a message box will show up as shown. Click OK.

  3. The Settings are grouped together to identify the List and Setting Type for organizational purposes only. Feel free to change them to the new list name (a SharePoint column on the Settings list).

  4. In the case of changing Accounts to Companies, every Setting name and value should be changed except for “CompanyListMapping” and “CompanyFieldName”.
  5. In the case of every other list, the Setting names may change except for the “[ListName]ListMapping” setting. This one should be left as it is.

Note: There are many areas within Flex that will NOT automatically changed during the automated process. Go through each section to find settings that need manual changing.
